Boston Globe: 73 percent of Pats fans think team will make playoffs

In a dramatic turnaround of hope, 73 percent of New England Patriots fans responded to a Boston Globe survey predicting the team would make the playoffs either as a wildcard team (60.6%) or winning the division outright (27.2%).

This is a dramatic turnaround from recent weeks when most fans thought the Pats had no chance. Why the reason for the change of heart?

First, the Pats have to win their remaining their remaining games. After seeing the performance of the offense in past weeks, most fans think they can beat the Cardinals at home and the Bills on the road.

Second, the Pats still need some help. Assuming the Pats finish 11-5, either the Baltimore Ravens have to lose a game, which would yield the last wilcard spot, or the Jets and the Dolphins both have go no better than 1-1 in the next two weeks.

Here is a graphic if you want to see for yourself.

  1. Out of all the AFC East Top 3 teams, the Pats have the toughest chance, largely because they are not in control of their own destiny.

What deluded Boston fans think is of no merit. And there has not been a dramatic turnaround of hope. They've been deluded from the second Cassell stepped onto the field. They've consistently likened him to Tom Brady every week. They've made no small deal of the fact that Brady also took over for an injured "hero" and that Cassell could be the 2nd coming of Tom Brady. And moreover, despite some good games out of Cassell, they Boston media has consistently ignored the many real and present dangers of leaving Cassell at starting QB, plus his many weaknesses. I should probably mention that he also doesn't throw very well.

So, I have no idea what you are talking about. That moment that Pats fans thought they had no chance lasted about 15 minutes on the clock. Then, they forgot all about Tom Brady and started recreating miracle situations in their mind.

Needless to say, it's no surprise to me. Boston is notoriously superstitious. What other city could take an 87-year losing streak and go absolutely insane when they finally (!!!) win a World Series? They thought that the Red Sox win was equivalent to the return of Jesus or something. Nothing wrong with being a bit happy with a win finally, but the insanity and the media and the fans were completely ungrounded from reality. They practically announced to the rest of the baseball world that they were the most special team in America. Yet, quite apparent to the rest of America, was the simple fact that they had one of the worst franchises in all of baseball - unable to win against even mediocre teams.

87 years is pathetic. It's unheard of. No other team even knows how to lose that badly. And it will be no surprise to many if they Sox go another 87 years before they get another W.S. win.

So, it is with New England - always drama upon drama. I imagine this went on for years even when the Patriots were losing, but I wouldn't know. I hardly paid attention to them until Brady came along as there was, quite honestly, not much to pay attention to.

    Have fun in fantasy land.
